Studio Mumbai is an office that we had known as a reference for well-built houses, precise use of materials, huge attention to detail and also for the exposition «Work-place» at the Venice’s biennale in 2010. It was observed that many articles were already written about Bijoy Jain and Studio Mumbai’s projects. From that point, we decided to work more about the office, the staff and the internal dynamic.

Bijoy Jain and his team, have a particular way to concept and build their project. Contrary to the belgian way (even the europeen way), from the start of project development, there is constantly a two-way discussion and reflection between the architect and craftmen. By meticulous drawings, experimentations, 1:1 scale mock-up of details, crafts, etc; the conception become really completed. All this steps are possible thanks to all the staff. It is especially on this point that we focused.

The scenography tries to expose the project through the craftmanship. In fact, it is considered here the work of craftsmen, especially the production of details, as the genesis of the project.
This is not just about craftmanship, the scenography was conceived to show how this architecture is detailed, and think by Bijoy and all the members of the team.

The exposition has been scheduled to be installed in any enclosed area. A plan inspired by a Studio Mumbai project, such as the Utsav House, is traced in the same way as a «kolam» – in reference to Indian culture – punctuated by  models of details. The merger of the plan and details, forms the project.
Then, the whole forms a walk in which the visitor can discover, in the various «pieces», the know-how of this office. The table is used here as a scenographic support representing all the links of the design chain present within this office. This is the object that is used by all the staff.

Technically, there are projections of short films on tables, showing members of the studio working on models, crafting, drawing, meeting, and so on.

The site chosen for the potential exhibition is the beautiful and prestigious warehouse of Tour & Taxis in Brussel. The vastness of the place allowed us to imagine tree symbols connoting the tropical forest. The wandering of the visitor then begins with the passage through this forest, leaving the intrigue to the distant view of emerging and suspended elements.

The simplicity of the scenography has for aim to set the delicate works of Studio mumbai out. In fact, the exposition wants to bring the visitor about details, the beautiful and refined details of that kind of architecture.
